Bei AMD bereitet man derzeit die Markteinführung der neuen Phenom-Prozessoren vor, die dem Unternehmen im Kampf gegen den übermächtigen Konkurrenten Intel wieder auf die Beine helfen sollen. Dabei verzichtet man aber offenbar nicht auf die Modellpflege der aktuellen Prozessoren der Athlon 64 X2 Serie.

Wie der taiwanische Branchendienst DigiTimes von Quellen bei Mainboardherstellern erfahren hat, will AMD in Kürze ein neues High-End-Modell der Athlon 64 X2 Reihe auf den Markt bringen. Dabei soll es sich um den AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ handeln. Das aktuelle Topmodell 6000+ kann mit dem kommenden Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 nicht mithalten, weswegen AMD den neuen Chip anbieten will, so die Quellen.

Der Athlon 64 X2 6400+ soll mit einer Taktfrequenz von 3,2 Gigahertz arbeiten und wird über 2 Megabyte Level2-Cache verfügen. Die Preise soll angeblich zwischen 220 und 248 US-Dollar liegen - bei Abnahme von 1000 Stück durch einen PC-Hersteller oder Händler.

AMD soll bereits erste Testversionen des neuen Prozessors an seine Partner unter den Mainboardherstellern verschickt haben, damit diese das BIOS ihrer Produkte entsprechend aktualisieren können. Angeblich soll die Markteinführung des Athlon 64 X2 6400+ kurz bevorstehen.

Ob AMD mit der neuen CPU tatsächlich ein ernst zu nehmendes Konkurrenzprodukt zu Intels neuen High-End Dual-Core anbieten kann, scheint unterdessen fraglich. DigiTimes zitiert Angaben der Mainboardhersteller, wonach der Chip ungefähr 10 bis 15 Prozent weniger Leistung bieten soll als die neue Intel-CPU. Außerdem soll er kaum noch Übertaktungspotenzial bieten und nur unwesentlich günstiger sein.
