Schon seit einiger Zeit steigern die CPU-Hersteller die Rechenleistung ihrer Chips nicht mehr durch weiteres hinaufsetzen der Taktrate, sondern durch hinzufügen von immer mehr Kernen in die Chip-Architektur. Damit Programme davon profitieren können müsse diese speziell dafür ausgelegt werden, ihre Rechenoperationen auf mehrere Kerne zu verteilen. Die Software-Industrie hängt den Hardware-Herstellern bei der Umstellung von Ein- auf Mehrkern-Prozessoren jedoch immer noch hinterher. Viele Programme ziehen keinen Vorteil aus dem Vorhandensein von mehr als einem CPU-Kern.

AMDs "Bulldozer"-Prozessoren sollen deshalb einen erweiterten Befehlssatz bekommen, der es ihnen erlaubt, mehrere Rechenoperationen auf einmal auszuführen. So sollen die CPUs unter anderem Multiplikations- und Additionsoperationen in einem Schritt ausführen kommen. Damit solle sich die Menge an Rechenoperationen, die für eine bestimmt Aufgabe notwendig sind, reduzieren lassen. Auch Programme, die nur einen Kern der CPU beanspruchen, sollen so schneller ablaufen.

AMD hat seine "Bulldozer"-Prozessoren für 2009 angekündigt. Wir werden sehen, ob der Chiphersteller, der erst jüngst herbe Verluste einstecken musste, sich damit wieder stärker gegen Intel behaupten kann.
